The Techniques

Spreader Bars
One of the most successful methods is to troll a range of 4 spreader bars all with a stinger attached in the centre. There is nothing more exciting than to hear the reel scream as 400lb bluefin screams off! On most days this is the most efficient method and large numbers of fish can be caught in one day, partly because the fight times are generally shorter lasting from 20 to 40 minutes. We often use deadbait mackerel to further increase catch rates. We use Shimano full roller big game rods, high quality Avet reels, hollow core braid and a wide range of bars and stingers. All our equipment including the bars and stingers are less than 2 years old and serviced regularly. These fish are real beasts so we take no chances!

Topwater Techniques
When the fish are busting, casting to them is an option. We use various lures such as poppers, stickbaits and some “secret weapon” silicone lures. This is hardcore fishing with longer fights, also the risk of gear failure is higher which is why we use only the very best “giant killing” popping rods and Saltiga/Penn Authority fixed spool reels capable of handling these fish. Anglers will be liable for any breakages or losses when adopting these methods unless they are using their own equipment (with prior discussion).

Live baiting
Not for the fainthearted! We drift, “bump troll” with multipliers or cast live mackerel with a spinning rod. There’s nothing on the line other than a hook so you are direct contact with the tuna. This can result in very long fight times if we encounter a big fish.
We can mix and match techniques where appropriate depending on what the fish are doing on the day and the wishes of the anglers.
